Inter Miami Weighs Futures of Key Players as Contract Clock Ticks Down

Off‑season decisions already on the agenda for Messi’s Miami

With the regular MLS season winding down and the club already locked into the playoffs, Inter Miami’s front office has turned its focus to the roster that will accompany Lionel Messi into 2027. Ten players have contracts that run out at the end of the 2026 season, and the club is actively assessing whether to keep, extend or let go of several of them.

Midfield and goalkeeping under review

According to club insider José Armando, two positions are receiving the most immediate scrutiny: central midfield and the goalkeeper spot. Argentine midfielder David Ayala arrived in Miami in January via a trade with the Portland Timbers under MLS’s U‑22 Initiative. After four seasons in Oregon, where he logged 98 appearances, scored four goals and contributed two assists, Ayala featured in 15 matches for Miami across all competitions in 2026 without finding the net or registering an assist.

Goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair is also on the decision list. The Canadian keeper joined Miami as a free agent after a standout season with Minnesota United, during which he earned the 2025 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award. In the current campaign, St. Clair started 23 of Miami’s 29 league games, kept four clean sheets and allowed 40 goals. Including his appearances in the CONCACAF Champions Cup and the Campeones Cup, he has taken the field 26 times this year. His contract includes a club option for the 2027 season, giving Miami a degree of flexibility.

Veteran striker’s contract also expires

Among the ten contracts that end in December, the most high‑profile name is Luis Suárez. The Uruguayan forward has been a key attacking outlet for Miami, tallying 15 goals and five assists in 25 MLS matches – the second‑best scoring record behind Messi. Across all competitions, Suárez has added another goal and an assist, bringing his total to 15 goals and six assists in 27 appearances.

Other players facing decisions

The remaining contract expirations involve a mix of loaned talent and home‑grown prospects. The club holds purchase options on forwards Micael and Matías Galarza, whose next steps will depend on whether Miami decides to activate those clauses. The academy cohort includes Israel Boatwright, Daniel Sumalla, César Abadía, Preston Plambeck and Alexander Shaw. Their futures will be shaped by the club’s broader strategy for integrating youth into the first‑team environment.

What the decisions could mean for 2027

Inter Miami’s approach to these contracts will have a direct impact on the squad that Messi leads next season. Retaining Ayala could provide midfield stability, while extending St. Clair’s option would keep a proven MLS goalkeeper in the fold. Conversely, letting Suárez go would create a significant void in the attack, prompting the need for new signings or a greater reliance on emerging talent.

The club’s front office is expected to weigh performance data, salary considerations and the overall balance of the roster before making any announcements. As the playoffs approach, the focus on the on‑field battle remains paramount, but the groundwork for the next campaign is already being laid.

Key points to watch

  • Whether Miami will trigger Dayne St. Clair’s 2027 club option.
  • Potential extension or departure of David Ayala after a modest 2026 season.
  • Luis Suárez’s contract status and the club’s plans for its second‑leading scorer.
  • The fate of loan players Micael and Matías Galarza, dependent on purchase options.
  • Development pathways for academy products whose contracts also expire.

Fans can expect official statements in the weeks following the season’s conclusion, as Inter Miami finalizes its roster ahead of the 2027 MLS campaign.
